LLYMLAEN

Llymlaen (pron. Lim-lane) is one of the Twelve, and the matron deity of the Thalassocracy of Limsa Lominsa. She is known as the Navigator and the Watcher of the Seas. (1)

EARLY HISTORY

Llymlaen is the daughter of Thaliak and Azeyma, and the sister of Nophica. Like Her father before Her, She expanded upon Her mother's lake; but rather than carving rivers into the face of the world, She created the seas. (2)

Some accounts hold that Llymlaen did this by creating Thalaos, a great sea serpent from whose mouth poured all the waters of the ocean. When She deemed the oceans to be full enough, She sealed the serpent away into an island, lest it continue and drown the world, and set the island to wander the seas; some believe that this is, in fact, Seal Rock. Lominsans believe that, someday, the seal will break, and the serpent will proceed to flood the world after all, and thus their motto "Till sea swallows all." (3)

Thaliak's rivers and Oschon's mountains began a tremendous upheaval of new lands and altered lands, but Llymlaen's new oceans began devouring all the lands that they encountered. To put an end to this madness, Llymlaen's grandmother Nymeia plucked a comet from the skies and brought it down to the world, bringing order and creating Rhalgr. (2)

Llymlaen and Oschon share an uncertain relationship, as the accounts vary. Some hold that She is the beloved of Oschon, others that it is Her aunt Menphina. Whatever the case, there is a legend told that Oschon once found Llymlaen bathing, and for whatever reason failed to make His presence known or turn away; Llymlaen, discovering His intrusion, threw a knife at Him. This may not be the real Thalaos, but this skeleton near Poor Maid's Mill in Upper La Noscea is named for it.

DEPICTION AND WORSHIP

In religious art, Llymlaen is often portrayed as a strong fisherwoman, who wields a harpoon. There is a great marble statue of Her in Aleport, however, that represents Her as a winged mermaid. Her symbol is a stylized representation of the ocean's waves. (1)

Limsa Lominsa's own history is beholden to Llymlaen; many believe that the goddess Herself guided the Galadion to what would otherwise seem a rocky doom, but resulted in the sailors and their families finding themselves in a fertile, receptive land. To this day, many Lominsans toast Llymlaen before setting to their drink, and a shrine to Her stands in the Anchor Yard in the Upper Decks. (4)

The Navigator is associated with wind and the fifth moon of the calendar, and is one of the rulers of the Heaven of Wind. There, where towering peaks overlook the endless sea, explorers, adventurers, mountain climbers, saints, and rescuers may forever sate their thirst for exploration. The winds generated by this plane roar into the Hell of Wind, where bandits, polluters, and pirates are endlessly torn asunder by the razor-sharp gales. (1)(5)
